SOFTWARE ARCHITECT

We are looking for a Software architect to lead the architecture of our Smart Locker platform as part of our development team, from embedded devices to cloud services, as we scale internationally.

This role sits at the intersection of embedded engineering, backend development, and cloud infrastructure. You will work closely with our embedded, backend and frontend teams to design a secure, scalable architecture spanning embedded devices, Python applications, and Google Cloud Platform services.

A major part of the role is defining and documenting architectural decisions for device-to-cloud communication, multi-tenant data isolation, security and device identity, and infrastructure-as-code. You will also review code across embedded and backend codebases and act as a technical sparring partner for the team.

This is a role for someone who is comfortable taking ownership of complex, cross-cutting technical decisions and drawing a clear line between implementation questions and architecture decisions. You should be motivated by building robust, well-documented systems in a company where growth is real and your work has a visible impact.

What you will do

• Design and document end-to-end system architecture from embedded devices to cloud services, including architecture decision records (ADRs)

• Define device-to-cloud communication, security and device identity for 32-bit microcontroller-based products, including secure boot, OTA updates and certificate lifecycle

• Architect multi-tenant, event-driven cloud systems on Google Cloud Platform (Cloud Run, Pub/Sub, IAM, Cloud SQL, Firestore)

• Own infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD architecture across Terraform, Ansible, Kubernetes and GitHub Actions

• Lead code reviews and set technical quality standards across embedded (C/C++) and backend (Python) codebases

• Evaluate architecture trade-offs and communicate their cost and risk implications to the business

• Draw the line between implementation-level decisions and architecture decisions, and document recurring questions for the team

What we are looking for

We are looking for a person with solid experience in software architecture spanning both embedded systems and cloud platforms in a technical product business. You should be comfortable working independently, reading unfamiliar code and documentation, and communicating clearly and asynchronously in writing.

Preferred background

• Strong experience designing architecture for embedded products (e.g. ESP-IDF/ESP32 or Zephyr/nRF Connect SDK) and cloud platforms, preferably GCP

• Track record building Python-based backend services (FastAPI or Django)

• Experience with multi-tenant isolation, event-driven architecture and device-to-cloud topologies

• Security architecture knowledge: IAM, secret management, key management, device identity and certificate lifecycles

• Experience leading cross-functional technical projects involving embedded, backend and infrastructure teams

Skills and qualities

• Strong technical judgment across embedded, backend and cloud domains

• Ability to structure complex technical topics, compare alternatives and drive decisions forward

• Ability to get familiar with unfamiliar code and system documentation independently

• Confidence to challenge and be challenged in code review, in both directions

• Understanding of infrastructure economics and cost trade-offs

• Strong written technical English for design documents and ADRs

• Hands-on working style, comfortable moving between architecture, review and coding

• Clear communication skills in written and spoken English. Finnish is considered an advantage
